The project Age Against the Machine represents a European network of cities and organizations dedicated to combating ageism and promoting the rights of older citizens.
The project was conceptually developed by the founders of the Artičoka Association, Lazar Jovanov and Branka Bajić Jovanov, on behalf of the Novi Sad – European Capital of Culture Foundation, and was implemented with the support of the European Union through the CERV Programme – Networks of Towns.
By encouraging intergenerational cooperation and using applied theatre methodologies, the project aimed to stimulate dialogue on age-based discrimination, promote solidarity between generations, and empower older people to participate more actively in discussions on public policies that affect their lives. The overall objective of the project was to increase awareness, knowledge, and interest among European citizens and decision-makers regarding ageism and the social position of the older population.
The Age Against the Machine project consisted of several interconnected components. In each participating country, interdisciplinary and intergenerational groups were formed to take part in research processes focused on analysing public policies, media representations, and everyday experiences related to ageing. These processes resulted in the creation of theatre performances addressing various aspects of ageism, including access to public services, discrimination in the labour market, gender inequalities, and the participation of older people in public life.
The performances were presented at national and international festivals and were accompanied by discussions with audiences, policymakers, and representatives of civil society.
Within the framework of the project, a total of 12 activities were implemented (7 international and 5 national):
- one kick-off training held in Novi Sad, Serbia;
- 5 premieres of interactive intergenerational community theatre performances (Poland, Serbia, Portugal, Denmark, Italy);
- 5 Age Against the Machine festivals organized in the following European cities: Holstebro, Cuneo, Évora, Goleniów, and Novi Sad;
- 1 Age Against the Machine conference held in Belgrade.
In addition to these activities, the partner network also implemented:
- 5 flash mob actions in public spaces, which were recorded and distributed online;
- 5 short video animations (each lasting one minute) produced for the purposes of the digital campaign
